George Coiley, Sustainability Manager at Northern Powergrid, spends his days developing and implementing strategies and plans to build a greener future.
His role sees him coordinating Northern Powergrid’s sustainability strategy. This brings together the company’s work to prepare the electricity grid for Net Zero and ensure the company has positive impacts on communities, as well as improving its own environmental performance.
George sits in the Sustainability and Regional Engagement team in the Energy System Directorate of Northern Powergrid.
The 32-year-old from Leeds, graduated with his PhD in Environmental Politics back in 2022 and joined the region’s largest electricity distribution operator in September.
He said “I’m passionate about addressing injustice while providing a better future for the next generation.
“Maintaining and developing our electricity infrastructure is essential for the net zero transition, that means every role at Northern Powergrid is a green role”
“I’ve only been at Northern Powergrid a small amount of time but already I can see so many opportunities for positive impact through our work.
“It’s also been great to meet so many colleagues already doing such fantastic work. We are fighting multiple crises at once and are going to struggle if we don’t pull together and act.”
This week (4 -10 November) is National Green Careers Week, a week to recognise and promote careers that can make a significant difference for young people.
A green career can be any job, role or occupation that contributes to preserving or restoring the environment and our planet.
And today (Thursday) as part of National Green Careers Week, Northern Powergrid are celebrating their commitment to a greener electricity network.
Head of Sustainability and Regional Engagement, Siobhan Barton, said “Having someone so passionate about sustainability is an excellent addition to our team; someone who can really help us is in our work to create a better future for the next generation and help drive our plans towards Net Zero.
“George brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the business that will help shape our business’s future.
“Everyday people across Northern Powergrid are working to create a more sustainable energy future, vital work to ensure we leave a positive impact on our environment.
“As George said, now every role at Northern Powergrid is a Green Career which is something we are very proud of.”
