Historic village of Staithes to welcome more sustainable infrastructure following major investment
Posted:
Despite its rich maritime history and quaint cobbled streets, Staithes has previously struggled with its power supply because of its ageing infrastructure, which Northern Powergrid is addressing through a series of upgrades.
The quarter of a million-pound investment from Northern Powergrid is expected to increase the efficiency of operations across Staithes, meaning less risk of power cuts for households and organisations.
Plus, Staithes’ supply will have the capacity to meet both current and future demand, as increased power is expected to facilitate a greater use of electric vehicles and heat pumps.
On the investment project, General Manager, Mike Hammond at Northern Powergrid said:
“Many of our investment projects focus on making networks more resilient to ensure less energy is wasted, through replacing older infrastructure with new and improved materials.
“As with all the areas we serve, we had a unique approach to our work in Staithes, which involves getting acquainted with the ancient village and sensitively upgrading its network.
“While much of Staithes’ charm lies in its heritage, we’re determined to give it the same opportunity that other villages across the UK enjoy, the chance to upgrade its network and have a more resilient power supply.”
Northern Powergrid began the work in Staithes in April 2023 and the project is expected to be completed at the beginning of 2025, following a break from May 2024 – October 2024 to ensure that no operations interfered with peak tourist season.
During its time in the village, Northern Powergrid has showed its commitment to further enhancement of the area with a range of initiatives, including the restoration of parts of Staithes in need of repair, namely the steps.
Plus, Northern Powergrid sponsored the Light Show at the popular Staithes Arts and Heritage Festival. This is part of its aim to show support for the areas it serves.
On the sponsorship, David Linley, a resident of Staithes and chairman of the festival said:
“We are delighted Northern Powergrid sponsored the stunning lighting at Staithes Arts and Heritage Festival - its brilliance attracts people from far and wide.
“Our festival is a community event which creates opportunities for involvement and local pride, and we are pleased that Northern Powergrid is creating links with residents, businesses and the heritage of the village to support us."
