LEARNING AT WORK WEEK; DAY 5: FRIDAY 17 MAY 2024

Posted:
20/05/2024

Virtual Reality demostration

From VR demonstrations to our fireside chat on Monday with our Directors, Paul Fitton and Mark Nicholson where we learnt about their personal career journey we gained so much to help us enhance our own career pathways, especially with a personal development plan as advised by Head of Talent & OD, Chris Nowland.

Jodie Coe, our People & Change Director got hands on during a site visit to Walker Primary substation this week. Jodie did some busbar earthing work, isolator maintenance, and transformer oil sampling under the expert tutelage of Andy Merry, Mike Weatherill, Jay Atkinson and Paul Cummings – thank you! Thank you also to Steve Tucknutt and Dan Nicholson who made this visit happen during Learning at Work Week.

We had 75 new colleagues join our teams channel, which has now reach 248, each of whom have been kept informed of events via daily reminders, but who have also been able to take advantage of the library of resources on the channel including TEDtalks, the podcast recommendations, first person accounts of DEI challenges as well as take part in our competitions and awards.

We also used this week to recognise those that have embraced learning at work and self development through our LinkedIn Learning Awards, and 13 of our colleagues who have between them won £260 in Amazon vouchers.

Gateshead College leading an apprenticeship session at our Castleford office

We have had successful apprenticeship and training marketplace sessions with QA, Kaplan, Gateshead College in both Shiremoor and Castleford with Newcastle University and Gateshead College delivering 5 workshops between them. This has led to 46 colleagues now enquiring into a course that will enhance their journey in Northern Powergrid.

Friday has been a full on day for our Health, Safety & Training ‘ofsted outstanding’ training provision who have ran three ‘Insights into our network’ sessions that included demonstrations by our apprentices for our non-technical or craft colleagues, giving them the chance to understand how our power network runs and what is happening when it stops working, so they can better visualise and explain this to our customers.

This week has been underlined with three competitions for colleagues, with Samantha Shepherd in Streetworks winning the chocolate hamper in the LAWW poster prize draw.

The LAWW treasure hunt will be announced next week but we have a good number of entries, so someone will win £20 Amazon voucher.

There is a couple more days for entries into our Speed Stacking Cup competition to win pizza for your team lunch!

Thank you to everyone that has taken part, attended a teams call, popped along to the marketplace, joined a workshop, read an article, watched a TEDtalk or listened to a podcast! It really does help build a stronger team, and demonstrate our learning culture.

Chris Nowland, Head of Talent and Organisational Development said “it’s been another successful Learning at Work Week, full of great content.

“It’s important we take time out of our busy schedules to reflect on our career paths and take stock of our own learning journeys.

“Learning is a continuous process, and no matter how much experience you have, there is always something more you can learn.

“Hopefully we have provided colleagues with the opportunity to do that this week. However, we also hope this has just whet the appetite and our colleagues use this to speak to their managers and approach us about their learning needs on a continuous basis”.
